Strand Celtic Under 12 girls qualified as one of four teams from Sligo Leitrim to take part in a Connacht Blitz last Saturday in Milebush Park Castlebar.
Strand Celtic were in a group with Shiven Rovers (Roscommon), Colga (Galway) and Killala (Mayo). After the first round of games Strand Celtic were through to the Plate competition. They played Cregmore (Galway) in the quarter finals and beat them 2 – 0 with goals from Ellie McCole and Claire Hanney. In the semi final the opponents were Ballinrobe and Strand came out on top with a 1 – 0 win after extra time. The other semi final saw a clash of two Sligo Leitrim teams, Cliffoney Grange and Ballymote, with Cliffoney Grange coming out on top after extra time. And so Strand Celtic and Cliffoney Grange came head to head in the Plate Final with Strand winning by a single goal.
This was a great achievement for this team who narrowly missed out earlier in the year of making it through to the top four of the Sligo Leitrim U12 league. The girls played 6 games on Saturday and they improved with every game. This win has now given these girls the confidence they need to go on and achieve more.
