Our annual golf classic was held on friday 22nd of august and was an outstanding success.
The golf course was in fantastic condition and with the sun shining we could not have wished for a better day. The tee was booked from 11am until 5pm and was busy all day with the later sessions being particularly busy. Despite this people got around easily and the humour was good.
The club’s annual golf classic which was an outstanding success with over thirty teams participating. There was keen rivalry as GAA all-star Dessie Dolans squad beat former Strand Celtic and Sligo Rovers player, Enda Scanlon, team by one point to the top prize. The Moate community school squad that included former strandhill native Kevin Duffy assured everyone that would not need their winning satnavs to bring them back to this idyllic setting next year !.
Enda also produced an old photograph of the Sligo Rovers Reserve squad that took a connacht title in the 1980’s with a youthful Mick McEnroe also in the frame. This proved beyond doubt Mick’s prowess as a soccer player in bygone years !.
There was a fantastic prize for nearest the pin on the 17th with a weekend away in the glamorous setting of Glassen golf club including bed, breakfast, evening meal and golf. This was claimed late on by Todd Burns as darkness descended as he got within five metres of a difficult pin setting that tested everyone throughout the day. The longest measurement was Mick McGettrick who came in at 40m but unfortunately for Mick there was no prizes for this !. Well done to Todd and we hope he enjoys the well deserved weekend break.
The winners on the day were:
1st: MOATE COMMUNITY SCHOOL
