LATE DRAMA SEES UNDER 12 TITLE GO TO GURTEEN
GIRLS UNDER 12 LEAGUE FINAL: STRAND CELTIC 0 GURTEEN CELTIC 1
Strandhill Community Park
Our under 12 girls were so unfortunate to go down by the narrowest of margins on Sunday afternoon last in the girls under 12 league final. The game was settled by a greta finish by the Gurteen centre forward with just three minutes on the clock. Despite some pressure our girls could not grab that goal they had fought so hard for in order to send the game into extra time.
The opening half was close with chances at both ends. Ciara Redmond made one great save in a one on one situation while at the other end both Amber Ferry and Katie Melly both fired over. Katie Melly also saw two great efforts saved by the Gurteen goalkeeper after some great work by Katie Osborne. The half ended with Strand in the ascendancy without being able to get that lead goal.
The second half was also close with Gurteen carving out the better chances with only two last ditch tackles by Amber Ferry keeping the game scoreless. At the other end Strand carved out some good half chances but the Gurteen goalkeeper was impeccable throughout the game and always seemed to be in the right place to deny the strand attack. Then with minutes left Gurteen grabbed the all important goal and there was no way back for our girls despite some great work by all the team to carve out chances in the closing moments.
Well done to Gurteen Celtic and Stephen McCoy on their success on sunday last. Gurteen have done great work with under age girls soccer over the last number of years and while disappointed our girls could not have lost out to a better and more deserving club..
