Tuesday, February 10, 2009 By John Fallon @ 12:04 PM :: Team

The FAI Futsal League of Ireland competition was created in 2007, when eight clubs competed in the inaugural tournament which was eventually won by Shamrock Rovers.  Sporting Fingal are its newest entrants and under the guidance of Junior Da Silva, Sporting Fingal Futsal Head coach and the Ireland Senior Futsal team coach, a very competitive team has been formed.
With the team made up of mixed nationalities and players from the Ireland Senior futsal squad skill and quality is in abundance.
Junior, Sporting’s Brazilian coach, said: “We have got some very good players, on paper very strong for sure but football is football”.
Derek O’Neill, FA National Futsal co-ordinator hailed Sporting Fingal’s participation, by stating “we are delighted to have Sporting Fingal on board. As a very progressive club it is a great step for them and no doubt their players will benefit greatly from the experience”
Sporting Fingal are placed in a tough group alongside Bohemians, Dundalk and Shelbourne.
The setting for games is the National Basketball arena in Tallaght and the indoor facilities in DCU. The competition kicked off with a familiarization set of matches on the 31st Jan.
The competition is currently running over 5 weeks with a break for the International Futsal weekend 18th-22nd February when Ireland host England, Cyprus and Kazakhstan in the UEFA Senior Futsal qualifiers.

What is futsal some might ask! Futsal is an indoor version of association football. It is played between two teams of five players, one of whom is the goalkeeper, and up to seven substitutes per team. Unlike some other forms of indoor football, the game is played on a hard court surface delimited by lines; walls or boards are not used.

Futsal is also played with a smaller ball with less bounce than a regulation football. The rules create an emphasis on improvisation, creativity and technique as well as ball control and passing in small spaces.
