Sporting Fingal 3-1 Galway United
Sporting Fingal rose to fourth place in the Airtricity League Premier Division with a comfortable victory over relegation-threatened Galway United at Morton Stadium.
Alan Kirby blasted home the opener after only three minutes and Colin Hawkins doubled the lead eight minutes later.
Defender Lorcan Fitzgerald grabbed his first league goal of the season on 72 minutes before Stephen Walsh notched one for the Tribesmen six minutes from time with a half-volley from the edge of the area.
Liam Buckley's Fingal, fresh from their victory at title chasers Shamrock Rovers last week, got off to a flier with Kirby's opener.
Ger O'Brien floated the ball deep into the box where Ronan Finn controlled and cut back a cross into the path of the onrushing Kirby who drilled a low shot to the bottom corner.
Galway keeper Darragh Geraghty was still reeling for the concession of that opener when his defence was once again unlocked with ease.
Conan Byrne delivered a crisp corner kick from the right on eleven minutes, allowing defender Colin Hawkins to rise unchallenged and plant a header beyond Geraghty.
It could have got worse for the Tribsemen on the stroke of half-time when slack marking from another Byrne corner provided Glen Crowe with a chance but the crossbar denied the forward his third goal in as many games.
Sean Connor's side, without goalkeeper Barry Ryan through suspension and talisman Stephen O'Donnell who underwent knee surgery earlier in the week, settled down after the turnaround and caused the home defence some nervy moments.
Stephen Walsh connected with a cross by Tom King on 55 minutes only to see his header hacked off the line by Kenny Browne.
But Fingal consigned Galway to their fifth defeat on the spin 18 minutes from time when Lorcan Fitzgerald's attempted cross from the end-line on the left smacked the far post and diverted into the net off the luckless Geraghty.
Walsh managed to pull a consolation back on 84 minutes with a half-volley from 20 yards which Brendan Clarke got a hand on before rattling the net.
However, with two games to play, Galway are assured of extending their season into the relegation play-off - most likely against Bray Wanderers - while Fingal continue to pursuit of European qualification for a second season running.
