Quigley the shoot-out hero as Fingal set up Saints tie

Tuesday, August 31, 2010 By John Fallon @ 12:22 AM :: Match Reports

Limerick 0-0 Sporting Fingal AET (3-4 pens)

Sporting Fingal needed extra time and penalties to see off the brave challenge of ten-man Limerick in the FAI Ford Cup fourth round replay at Jackman Park.

Limerick's Lee O'Mara was send off early in the second half after receiving a second yellow card at the Lower Carey's Road venue.

Gary O'Neill, Alan Kirby, Ronan Finn and Shaun Williams were all on target from 12 yards for the Dubliners, while Limerick missed two spot kicks in the shoot-out.

Fingal should have taken the lead inside the opening five minutes, but Gary O'Neill sliced his shot badly wide from just outside the six-yard box, following a low cross from Conan Byrne on the right.

Timmy Kiely went close for the hosts in the tenth minute with a low free-kick, which flew just outside Darren Quigley's right-hand post after Shaun Maher fouled Shane Clarke.

At the other end, Limerick keeper Dave Ryan pulled off a brilliant reaction save from an O'Neill header on the half hour mark.

Pat Scully's side gave themselves a mountain to climb in the 50th minute when O'Mara received a second yellow card for a foul on Maher.

However, the home side should have taken the lead a minute later when John Tierney's 25-yard drive was tipped onto the crossbar by Quigley.

But Clarke left the holders off the hook when he blasted the rebound over from eight yards with the goal at his mercy.

The Shannonsiders went close to snatching it in the closing minutes of normal time with Stephen O'Flynn, whose equaliser last Friday brought this game to a replay, drilling across the goal.

Fingal dominated most of extra time with Ronan Finn driving into the side-netting after two minutes.

The Limerick keeper Dave Ryan didn't have one serious save to make once his side went down to ten men but, in the end, his side went out in the penalty shoot-out. Darren Quigley saved Limerick's fourth attempt by Timmy Kiely while after Shaun Williams converted, Lims blasted their fifth over the crossbar.
