Sporting Fingal’s A Championship (reserve) meet Bohemians tonight (Aug 24) in the final of the Newstalk Cup at Dalymount Park (7.30pm). The side played out a 2-2 draw against Dundalk in Saturday's league game.
The tie between the North Dublin rivals tonight promises to be an exciting contest, featuring some of the best of emerging talent rising through the ranks within the Airtricity League.
Robbie Horgan, Sporting Fingal manager, said: "We’ve been in very good form all season so we have to be confident going into the game
“We beat Bohs earlier in the season, although it was a tight game. They are a good side – I think ourselves and Bohemians have probably been the most consistent teams in the Newstalk A Championship, so it’s no coincidence that we are competing in the Newstalk Cup Final.”
After hanging-up his gloves a number of seasons ago, Horgan entered into coaching with Sporting Fingal. He has now completed all his coaching badges with the exception of the UEFA Pro Licence, and he says he is really enjoying this side of the game.
“I love managing,” he said. “When I started coaching at Fingal, this wasn’t part of the plan at all. But then Liam [Buckley] asked me would I take over the reserve team and I was delighted to do it. There are a lot of extra responsibilities on managers but it is something I am really enjoying. Having played and coached, I view management as being the next logical step.”
Fingal recorded impressive results against Shamrock Rovers, UCD, Drogheda United and Dundalk to seal a semi-final duel with FC Carlow. The game was decided by a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw and Fingal goalkeeper Brendan Clarke proved to be the hero.
Since that semi final tie, the Newstalk Championship has commenced and the side have not lost in their ten matches to date.
Their most recent outing, played last Saturday against Dundalk, finished 2-2 with goals through an o.g. and Kevin Dawson. Fingal looked comfortable in the match, leading by two goals, only to concede twice in the last 25 minutes.
