After the league game in Galway last Friday week, we were back down to Terryland for the the FAI Ford Cup replay on Tuesday against Mervue United.
On paper it looked as if it would be a potential banana skin but all credit to the lads we went down with a great attitude and we were determined to be in the next round of the competition.
We went 1-0 up in the first half and to be fair to Mervue they could have been at least level at the break.
At the interval, Liam had his bit to say to us and the second half we dominated from start to finish. The game ended up 4-0 but we could have had double that by the end of the tie.
With the replay falling on a Tuesday and a game with Dundalk approaching on Friday night it was vitally important that our recovery started immediately after the Mervue game.
We were back in for a warm down/stretch Wednesday morning with our preparations for Friday night kicking in fully Thursday morning.
Going into the game Friday night and looking at the other fixtures I felt it was vital that we picked up three points.
The game itself won't be remembered for been a classic - and if I'm been honest it wasn't one of our better performances this season - but at this stage winning games is all that matters.
The winning goal was almost like watching a replay of our first strike against Mervue United five days earlier.
Shaun Williams has a knack of finding himself in great areas in the opposition box and for both goals the delivery from Ollie Cahill was fantastic.
For me, credit has to go to our coaching staff. They work very hard on our set pieces and with the effort that has gone in to them this season the return hasn't been good enough to be fair.
However, as we saw on Friday night, they are extremely important and even if you’re not playing to your limits, then being good in both boxes from set-pieces can win you games.
We have this full week before we travel the short distance to take on UCD on Friday. They are a very good team and try to play football the right way.
This will be our third game against them and have only taken one point from a possible six so it’s important we go there with the right attitude.
From there, we host St. Patrick’s Athletic next Monday at Morton in the re-arranged fixture.
Having only played them a couple of weeks ago we know how tough this will be, but if we still want to be in with a chance of mounting a league challenge, another three points is a must.
