COLGA U16 Girls - All Ireland Final
Final Saturday 3pm Terryland Park versus St Francis (Dublin). Please support

COLGA U16 Girls Reach All Ireland Final

Colga travelled to Flancare Park on Sunday to play Longford Town in the Semi-Final of the Irish Cup Girls U16. Having been beating by the same opponents last year in the U14 Final. Colga decided on 4 5 1 formation from the start. This tactic allowed Colga to stifle a very good Longford midfield Leanne keegan, Karen Delaney, Aoife darcy and Aisling Reynolds. Longford pressed forward for the first 20 minutes but found it hard to break down the Colga midfield and on occasions when they did, they were denied by an excellent defence in Mary Heavey, Linda Corcoran, Jenny Kinnane and Keara Cormican and excellantly supported by Saorse Burke in Goal. Colga started to push forward after 20 minutes and with Jenny Kinnane and Leah Philips in the middle of midfield and Anna Lane and Sinead Heavey out wide, this gave them more impetus. Colga then changed to a more familer 4 4 2 formation with Rachel Bannon linking up with Alana Moran up front. This opened the game up more but there were few scoring chances created because of both defences usually coming out on top. Longford did create one chance when Irish Inernational Michelle Farrell broke free on the left and hit an unstoppable shot but it rebounded off the middle of the post back into play. Colga also had a couple of chances especially, when on both occasions Lane broke wide and found Moran who twice brought saves out of Betheny Houldsworth in the Longford goal. The first half ended nil all. The second half was much the same with the defences in great form and it was Longford who created two good chances in the half but were twarted by Burke in goal with two brillant one handed saves having to face a one to one situation. Colga also threathened on two occassions when Cormican tested Houldsworth from two free kicks.
