Wonderful Girls Under 16 Performance
By Sean McDonald @ 1:34 PM :: 56 Views :: Match Reports

Last Saturday week saw our girls give their performance of the season against Arrow Harps. This was our first game at home this year at the Complex and saw us facing opponents that were higher than us in the league.

From the start, it was clear that it was going to be an exciting game with near perfect conditions. Both sides came close many times in the game and it was as good a game to watch as we’ve seen for some time at the complex.

Both teams played lovely football and despite the fact that it finished all square, seldom can a 0 – 0 draw have been more entertaining! Cathy Clarke exceeded even her high standards with a flawless game and several saves that we could not have expected her to make. Sarah Oates improves with every game and Rory Delap could learn a thing or two from her throw ins!

Nessa Brennan played her best game of the season and cleared up every ball that came her way. Siobhan Boyle had another outstanding game in the centre of defence and Lauren Ruddy, who who travelled back from Connaught Trials in Castlebar that morning to play, was brilliant.

Mary Meehan covered every inch of the pitch and was courageous and imaginative in every ball she played.

Our captain for the day, Mary O’Flynn, had another best game of the season and always passed the ball very well. Kate Caldwell was very strong and gave her usual game of continuous running and tackling. Our front three played their hearts out and Niamh Kerins was our Player of the Game.

Niamh hit the crossbar with a thundering shot and also had two more shots brilliantly saved by the Arrow Harps goalkeeper. Niamh also travelled back from Castlebar to play and we are sure she slept well on Saturday night with all the effort.

Aoife Keogh typified our performance on the day by playing her heart out in an unfamiliar role and she again was unlucky not to score. Sarah Regan improves every time she plays for us and, again, had a best performance of the year on Saturday.

Emma Kerins, who togged out despite not being well, was Assistant Manager for the day and we look forward to having her back playing next week.

Well done to all – we have two games left and would encourage parents to come to these games to see how much effort the girls are putting in.
